Welcome to your Graduate Students’ Union, Local 19 of the Canadian Federation of Students. The GSU is a democratic students’ union that represents over 13,000 full-time and part-time graduate students. Our role is to improve the life and the environment of graduate students at the University. Your elected representatives represent graduate students on various boards and committees of the University. Your elected representatives defend public, post-secondary education and promote equity and social justice. Course Unions play a vital role in representing students in their department and to the GSU Council.

The GSU is a proud and founding member of the Canadian Federation of Students. Through the Federation we work nationally and provincially with other students’ unions for a high-quality, accessible, public post-secondary education system. By working collectively, we are able to accomplish and benefit much more than we would on our own.

We encourage you to get involved with your students’ union. There are a number of sub-committees that meet throughout the year to discuss and work on campaigns and issues. Our sub-committees are vital to the work that we do on behalf of all graduate students.

Our website and handbook provide invaluable information on the GSU, the Federation, our services, issues and advocacy work, and course unions. They also contain useful insights about the broader university including information on university policy and processes. Each section will enable you to navigate the University procedures more effectively as you commence your degree and move toward degree completion. All information is updated regularly on this website throughout the year.

The Students’ Union staff are an integral part of the GSU and are available to help you with academic appeals, health and dental insurance, gym bookings, funding inquiries, course union management and miscellaneous questions.
