SPECIAL LEAVE LEAVE
FOR HEALTH PROBLEMS OR PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES
SGS Policy on leaves:
"A full-time student may be absent from the University for an extended period or may participate in a program offered by another university if and only if the student has received
written permission from the graduate unit in which he or she is registered. A graduate student who, in a given session, is absent from the University without receiving prior approval
may lose good standing. In exceptional cases, a graduate unit may recommend to the School the termination of the student's registration and candidacy."
Personal circumstances could be serious financial difficulties or a temporary employment transfer, amongst others. If you have serious financial reasons, you will be required to apply
for an SGS Bursary. You may take a one- to three-term leave from your program by applying to your Graduate Coordinator and completing a Leave Request Form.
- You will not be required to pay fees for this period nor will you be registered; thus you can't use the library, attend courses or expect advice from your supervisor;
nor can you make any formal progress towards your degree. You will not be covered by the GSU Supplementary Health Insurance Plan.
- Your terminal date will be extended by the duration of the leave taken, i.e. your program clock will be stopped. Call the GSU for advice.
- You won't be eligible to receive or defer U of T fellowship support.
- If you receive other funding, you must check their regulations to see if you may continue to hold the award.
- If you have an OSAP loan outstanding, please make sure you know about the Interest
Relief Program
