GSU GYM

The GSU gym can be booked for 1 hour/week by graduate students, either daily or monthly - because of the demand, only graduate students are allowed to use the space. The GSU gym is open from 10am - 11pm Monday to Friday and volleyballs and basketballs are available.

To book, call Ruth Perkins between 10am and 5pm at 946-8699. If you want to book the gym for the whole month, you must call the last Thursday of the month preceding, at 10am (for January bookings call the second week of December). Call on time; space goes quickly. Booking policy is below.


DROP-IN ACTIVITIES

Pick-up basketball: Thursdays 6-8pm. Year round.

Pick-up volleyball: Wednesdays 8-11pm. May to September.

Yoga class: Thursdays 4-5pm. Bring a mat (and sweater during cold weather).
The last class of the summer term is July 22nd. Check here in September for
the fall schedule.

GSU GYM CLASS INSTRUCTORS WANTED

Are you an instructor for Yoga, Pilates, or any other low or non-impact athletic activity? We are looking for instructors wanting to gain some experience or who would just like to volunteer their time to teach a class during daytime hours at the GSU gym.

GYM BOOKING POLICY
Approved by GSU Executive July 13/04, amended June 28/06, November 27/06, September 24/07, March 10/08, June 18/08. The GSU Executive reserves the right to refuse or cancel gym bookings at any time deemed necessary for the smooth functioning of the GSU.


1) Sports Bookings

a) Graduate students can book the gym for 1 hour per week. If there are available spots on the Tuesday following gym booking day, they may book another hour.

b) Only volleyball, basketball, badminton and fitness classes may be booked, as the gym is not safe for other sports.

c) The gym will normally be booked only by phone on the last Thursday of the month for the upcoming month, starting at 10 am. For July and August it will be booked the last week of June, for January the 2nd week of December.

d) Between 10am and 5pm, gym bookings are restricted to 2 people in the gym per hour, both of whom must be registered U of T graduate students. From 5pm on, there must be at least 4 players per booking, at least 75% of whom must be registered U of T graduate students.

e) Between 10am and 5pm gym bookings are restricted to singles badminton, due to noise in the basement offices and meeting room. Violation of this policy will result in the suspension of booking privileges from 10am to 5pm, for four months.

f) Students booking between 10am and 5pm will be required to provide both players’ names and student numbers when making the telephone booking. Student status will be verified at the time of the booking. Gym usage will be monitored. Students using the gym will be required to show their TCards upon request. Only those students who have booked the gym are permitted to use the gym during any given hour. Violation of this policy will result in the suspension of booking privileges from 10am to 5pm, for four months.

g) Students booking between 5 and 11pm will provide the Executive Assistant with a list of their players’ names and and student numbers, where applicable. Names should match those used by ROSI. Violation of this policy will result in the suspension of booking privileges from 5-11 pm, for four months.

h) Preferential booking rights can be granted by the Executive Assistant. Appeals of the Executive Assistant’s decisions can be made to the Management Committee. For sports activities, groups of 20 or more graduate students may request short or long-term bookings. For other recreational activities (dance, yoga, special events), groups of 20 or more graduate students may request one-time only bookings.

2) Other Activities

Requests shall be made in writing to the Management Committee. Priority will be given in the order below:

a) GSU activities
b) graduate students
c) GSU Executive and Staff
d) other University of Toronto students
e) non-profit and community organizations

The GSU may decide to charge, or waive charges, for approved users. Normally it will be free to graduate students and GSU staff. Normal charges would be $25/hour weekdays, $35/hour weeknights and weekends.
