We want reduced tuition instead.
Since the post-program fees were abolished in the early 90s, graduate students have had to pay full fees for the duration of their degree. During this time, the GSU has consistently called on the Provost and the President to re-institute Post-4 Fees, which means reduced tuition for students beyond Year 4. However, at present, only doctoral students in Years 5 and 6 are eligible for an annual $2,500 Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant. While we are disappointed that the U of T refuses to consider a reduced tuition fee for year 5+ PhD students, we are hopeful that graduate students can benefit from this grant.
Note: The SGS is distributing this money in two instalments so that if you graduate before the 2nd payment, it will not be issued to you. You must apply for this grant in September. Forms are available in your department, at SGS, or Student Services at OISE/UT. The form is also available on the SGS website in PDF format.
Note: The Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant does not include Years 7 and above, which is contrary to the recommendations of the 2000 Task Force on Graduate Students Financial Support. The GSU continues to advocate for a change to this practice. Send an e-mail to the Provost to say that students in Year 7 should be eligible for this modest grant. Remember to ‘cc’ the message to info.gsu@utoronto.ca. We will continue to push for reduced Post-4 tuition.
