1. GRADFEST on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018!
Calling all incoming and returning graduate students! Join us on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm for UTGSU’s annual Fall Orientation: GRADFEST! Enjoy a day filled with free food, swag bags, games and a chance to learn about all the services provided through the UTGSU. You’ll also get the chance to interact with awesome graduate-specific information tables that will highlight all of the resources around campus. 2. Health & Dental Insurance Change-of-Coverage Period
Message from Your Health Plan Administrator: Welcome to the new Academic year. Starting September 1st 2018, please visit the Graduate Students’ Union website: www.utgsu.ca/insurance for the following:

Opt In and Opt Out Dates: September 1st-October 2, 2018 (no exceptions will  be made if you miss the deadlines)

3. UTGSU 2018-2019 Annual Resource Guide Notebooks Are Here!!!
The UTGSU’s 2018-2019 Annual Resource Guides have arrived! Come out to UTGSU’s Gradfest 2018 or visit the UTGSU office to grab one. This guide is an important tool that provides graduate students with graduate-specific information to enhance their campus experience. Please note that this year’s Annual Resource Guide is a notebook and not an agenda.

4. Volunteers Needed for GRADFEST 2018
The UTGSU is seeking enthusiastic and reliable UTGSU members who are willing to volunteer at GRADFEST on Wednesday, September 5th from 4 pm to 7 pm. To volunteer, please contact Sophie at academics3and4@utgsu.ca with your name, preferred email and phone number. Duties will include but are not limited to: setting up, assisting info fair participants and clean-up. Volunteers will receive a free meal during the event, as well as a gift card! This is a great opportunity to learn more about your Union and meet folks from all over the university. Deadline to apply is Monday, August 20th, 2018 @ 5 PM.

5. Sign Up for the UTGSU Volleyball League 
The UTGSU Volleyball league will be starting in October. Three divisions are available – Recreational, Intermediate, and Competitive – and the league will run Monday to Wednesday nights from 5pm to 11pm. Registrants can register as a team, or individually (will be grouped together or placed with another team). Registration opens on August 27, 2018. Last day to register for the league is Friday September 14th at 5PM. More information about the league and how to register is available online at https://www.utgsu.ca/volleyball/. If you have any questions please feel free to email volleyball@utgsu.ca  and/or come to Gradfest where we will have a table with information about the league as well the opportunity to register in person.

6. UTGSU Gym Bookings for September 
The UTGSU gym can be booked for 1 hour per week by graduate students for athletics for the entire month.  The UTGSU gym will reopen on September 17, 2018 To book please email gym@utgsu.ca or call 416-978-8464 on August 29th beginning at 10:00 AM.

Call early as space goes quickly!
Monday and Friday Evenings reserved for Doubles Badminton on September 17 and 24th from 5-11 PM
Tuesday and Wednesday Evenings reserved for Volleyball – Wednesday, September 24th from 5-11 PM and September 25 and 26th from 5-11 PM
Thursday Evenings reserved for Basketball- September 20 and 27th from 5-8:00 PM for one hour time slots and drop in Basketball from 8-11 PM

*Only registered graduate students may play drop in volleyball or basketball.  Gym violations will result in a booking privilege suspension for four months.

7. UTGSU Office and HDI Office to Return to Regular Office Hours
The UTGSU office and HDI office will be going back to our regularly scheduled hour’s starting Monday, August 13th, 2018. Our UTGSU Office hours will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm and Thursdays from 12 pm to 5 pm. The UTGSU HDI Office will be open Mondays to Wednesdays from 10 am to 4 pm, Thursdays from 12 pm to 4 pm, and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm.

8. UTGSU Spring Cycle Conference Bursary 2018 Winners
Emails have been sent out to the winners of the Spring Cycle 2018 UTGSU Conference Bursary. If you haven’t received an email stating that you’ve been awarded a bursary, your application was not among those selected.

9. JOIN NOW your UNION’s Policy & Operations Standing Committee (POC)
This important Standing Committee of UTGSU Council oversees the Union’s legislation and governance practices. Based on your experience in governance and academic skills, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to conceptualizing the POC Program for 2018-2019, editorial streamlining of existing documentation, or priority restructuring according to Not-for-profit Corporations Act legislation, also remembering housekeeping bylaws/policies concerning appeals, elections, and UTGSU’s own student mental & overall health legislation. We welcome motivated U of T Graduate Students who are willing to learn from scratch as well as those with any experience or interest in constitutional, corporate, and human rights law, policy and equity studies, or political philosophy. Does your degree program involve fieldwork? Are you interested in working to develop a set of guidelines aimed to prevent sexual violence and harassment in the field and support survivors? If so, please contact Sam Stead at governance@utgsu.ca 

11. Grad Talk: Talking to New People in Grad School
Does the idea of walking into a room full of strangers make you want to run in the opposite direction?  Are you really interested in finding a mentor but don’t know what to talk to them about? On Tuesday, August 21st from 12 PM to 2 PM, we will teach you the tips and techniques that will make those conversations a lot less awkward and a lot more meaningful.
