Elections 2017 Timeline*

Nomination Period: Friday, January 13 – Friday, January 27
Potential Nomination Extension: Monday, January 30 – Friday, February 03
All-Candidates Meeting: Monday, February 06 (Time TBD)
Campaign Period Starts: Tuesday, February 07
All-Candidates Debate: TBD (about one week before voting begins)

Position Summaries

Academic and Funding Commissioner, Divisions 1 and 2

Duties include: to liaise with School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and faculties in Divisions 1 and 2; monitor implementation of university and departmental student funding policies for students in Divisions 1 and 2; represent the Union on the Graduate Education Council; and, co-chair the committee dealing with Academics and Funding.

Academic and Funding Commissioner, Divisions 3 and 4

Duties include: to liaise with School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and faculties in Divisions 3 and 4; monitor implementation of university and departmental student funding policies for students in Divisions 3 and 4; represent the Union on the Graduate Education Council; and, co-chair the committee dealing with Academics and Funding.

Civics and Environment Commissioner

Duties include: to coordinate campaigns pertaining to the environment; lead student engagement efforts for federal, provincial, municipal and Union elections; oversee municipal lobbying efforts; coordinate implementation of municipal campaigns of organizations of which the Union is a member; represent the Union in regards to non-academic services within the university; and chair the committees dealing with the environment and civic engagement.

External Commissioner

Duties include: to coordinate implementation of provincial and federal campaigns of organizations of which the Union is a member; oversee provincial and federal lobbying efforts; act as the Union’s liaison with external bodies; attend meetings and conferences that enhance the interests of the Union; inform Council of external issues affecting members of the Union; and, chair the committee dealing with Social Justice.

Finance and University Governance Commissioner

Duties include: to liaise with University administration; ensure graduate representation on University decision-making bodies; ensure communication between the Union and graduate student representatives on University committees; chair the committee dealing with University Governance; present financial recommendations to Council; in cooperation with Finance Office, prepare and submit annual audit; and, chair the committees dealing with Finance and University Governance.

Internal Commissioner

Duties include: to ensure scheduling of Executive and Council meetings; work with course unions and on-campus organizations; organize the Course Unions’ Presidents’ lunch; be responsible for the duties of the Council chair in her/his absence; to represent the Union to other student or campus organizations; be a member of the Management Committee and the committee dealing with Finance; and, chair the committee dealing with internal affairs.

General Information on UTGSU Elections

The elections process pertains to the following subjects of action:

  • Election of the Executive of the Union as due process of the bylaws and policies of the organization.
  • Referenda submitted to the members of the electorate as due process of the bylaws of the organization.
