Opting-Out & Opting-In

Fall Semester: September 1st-October 1, 2018
Winter Semester: (enrolments and opt outs for new students only) January 1-31, 2019
**No exceptions will be made if the opt-out date is missed**

How to Opt-Out

To opt-out, you must show proof of equivalent insurance (not OHIP). You must opt-out annually, at the beginning of the term you are first registered in. You cannot rejoin the plan after you have opted-out, so check the expiry date on your insurance. Visit www.studentcare.ca to opt-out online.

How to Opt-In

To opt-in your dependents, you must opt them in annually, at the beginning of the term you are first registered in. This is an annual plan.  You cannot opt in your dependents for one semester only. Visit www.studentcare.ca to opt-in online.

Health and Dental Insurance Information for New Students starting in January 2019

IMPORTANT: The January 1-31, 2019 Change of Coverage period is for NEW students only starting their program in January 2019.

Opt-Out Reimbursements

Fall Semester Opt-Out Reimbursements:

The Fall Semester opt-out refunds will be issued during the third week of November after the add/drop period is over. Cheques will also be mailed out during the third week of November. You should have received an email with an application number after you opted-out. That is your confirmation that your opt-out was successful. If you do not receive your refund by the middle of December, please send an email including your student number to: health@utgsu.ca and forward the confirmation email with the application number and we will forward it to the broker for investigation.
Winter Semester Opt-Out Reimbursements:

The Winter Semester opt-out refunds will be issued during the third week of March after the add/drop period is over. Cheques will also be mailed out during the third week of March.  If you do not receive your cheques by the end of April, please forward the confirmation email you received when you opted out and we will forward it to the broker for investigation.

Remember, you have an option for “direct deposit”. If you wish to use this option, please indicate this on the opt-out form and provide your banking information.

Health and Dental Insurance Plan Coverage After Convocation 

If you are on the UTGSU Health and Dental Insurance (HDI) Plan, and you graduated in November, you will still be covered under the plan until December 31, 2017 provided you paid the Fall fees. You can purchase the 12 Month Extended Coverage. The opt-in dates are January 1-30, 2017. For more information, view the benefits package.
