Summer Gym Bursary: FAQ

April 28th, 2017

As part of a three-year pilot program to promote graduate student wellness, the UTGSU Executive Committee worked closely with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) to offer students a chance to be reimbursed for their summer gym membership to the Hart House gym, and the Athletics Centre, also known as KPE. Students will be eligible for reimbursement starting May 15, 2017. We have made some victories, which we are very proud of, but continue to advocate for students who are not fully covered by this reimbursement.

For more information, please see the list of FAQs below.

Q: Who is eligible for the summer gym bursary?

A: All graduate students registered in research-stream master’s and PhD programs in the summer session are eligible for the bursary. Only those who are not registered in the summer and those registered in professional programs are ineligible for this bursary.

Unfunded research-stream master’s students and research-stream students beyond the normal funded period are still eligible.

If you are unsure of which cohort you’re a part of, please email the Academics and Funding Commissioner for Division 3 and 4, Andrea, at academics3and4@utgsu.ca.

Q: Do I get reimbursed in full for both Hart House and the Athletics Centre for the entire summer?

A: Students who are eligible for the summer gym bursary will receive $97.60 for their Hart House gym membership from May-August, 2017. At the Athletics Centre, students will receive a maximum of $97.60, which will be applied to students’ 1, 2 or 4 month membership. Therefore, the cost of a 4-month and a 2-month membership will be partly covered by the bursary, and a 1-month bursary will be fully covered. Eligible students can only apply to the summer gym bursary once per summer term.

Q: How do I get reimbursed?

A: You can get reimbursed by uploading your proof of payment through the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) portal here:

Summer Gym Bursary Reimbursement Portal

Your level of reimbursement will vary. Full instructions can be found on the SGS webpage, at: www.sgs.utoronto.ca/currentstudents/Pages/SGS-Gym-Bursary.aspx. Reimbursement will be processed within 7-10 business days. For more information, you can contact Michelle Ekuban, the SGS Financial Advisor at: m.ekuban@utoronto.ca.

Q: Why aren’t all graduate students able to get reimbursed for using the Hart House Gym and Athletics Centre?

A: At this time, the UTGSU Executive Committee is actively advocating for the summer gym fee to be reimbursed to all graduate students, or at least, providing students with a discounted, affordable student rate to the facilities. We’d also suggest you’d consider joining a free graduate student intramural league in the Fall and Winter (for more information: www.utgsu.ca/2017/01/27/sgs-intramurals) or reserve a one-hour timeslot in the UTGSU gym for the month of May for singles or doubles badminton, or drop-in volleyball or basketball (for more information: www.utgsu.ca/athletics/gsu-gym.)

Q: I have a question that is not listed on this FAQ page. Who should I direct it to?

A: If you have additional questions that were not outlined in this FAQ page, please email info@utgsu.ca with the subject line: Summer Gym Bursary Question, or call (416) 978-2391 during our hours of operation.
