As part of a three-year pilot program to promote graduate student wellness, the UTGSU Executive Committee worked closely with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) to offer students a chance to be reimbursed for their summer gym membership to the Hart House gym, and the Athletics Centre, also known as KPE. Students will be eligible for reimbursement starting May 15, 2017. We have made some victories, which we are very proud of, but continue to advocate for students who are not fully covered by this reimbursement.
Summer Gym Bursary: FAQ
Again this year, the UTGSU Executive Committee is working closely with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) to offer graduate students a chance to be reimbursed for their summer gym membership. Students registered in research-stream programs will be eligible starting May 15, 2018 for full reimbursement for a summer gym membership at Hart House and for full or partial reimbursement (depending on the duration and type of membership purchased) to the Athletics Centre, also known as the Kinesiology and Physical Education Centre. We have made some victories, which we are very proud of, but continue to advocate for students who are not fully covered by this reimbursement.
For more information, please see the list of FAQs below.
Q: As a graduate student, can I use Hart House and the Athletics Centre (AC) for free this summer?
A: Your level of reimbursement will vary depending on the location and duration of your membership. For instance, eligible graduate students will be reimbursed fully for a May-August membership at Hart House Gym. At KPE, you’ll receive up to $101.00 for your full or partial summer membership (i.e., 4 months, 2 months, or 1 month).
- Who is eligible for the summer gym bursary?
- All graduate students registered in research-stream Master’s and PhD programs throughout the summer 2018 session are eligible for the bursary. For example, unfunded research stream master’s students and research-stream students beyond the normal funded period are still eligible. Only students who are not registered in the summer and students registered in professional programs are ineligible for this bursary.
Q: How do I get reimbursed?
A: You can get reimbursed by uploading your proof of payment through the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) portal. Your level of reimbursement may vary. Full instructions can be found on this SGS webpage: www.sgs.utoronto.ca/currentstudents/Pages/SGS-Gym-Bursary.aspx. Reimbursement will be processed within 7-10 business days.
Q: When does the summer term start?
A: The Summer academic session begins on May 1, 2018, and runs August 31, 2018. Graduate students registered throughout this period are eligible.
Q: Why aren’t all graduate students able to get reimbursed for using the Hart House Gym and Athletics Centre (AC)?
A: At this time, the UTGSU Executive Committee is actively advocating for the summer gym fee to be reimbursed to all graduate students, or at least, providing students with a discounted, affordable student rate to the facilities. We’d also suggest you’d consider joining a free graduate student intramural league (for more information: www.utgsu.ca/graduate-student-intramurals/) or reserve a one-hour timeslot in the UTGSU gym for the month of May for singles or doubles badminton, or drop-in volleyball or basketball (for more information: www.utgsu.ca/athletics/gsu-gym.)
Q: I have a question that is not listed on this FAQ page. Who should I direct it to?
A: For additional questions, please email email@example.com with the subject line: Summer Gym Bursary Question, or call (416) 978-2391 during our hours of operation. You can also contact the School of Graduate Studies at firstname.lastname@example.org.
